Current Research

I’m working on understanding how computations in the retina may be specialized for the statistics of natural scenes in order to facilitate learning in primary visual cortex. My other research interests include natural sound statistics and machine learning.

I did my undergraduate work in physics and math at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, and I came to Berkeley hoping to study high-energy physics. After a few years of quantum field theory, dark matter, and cosmology, I split from that field, stumbled upon the Redwood Center, and hit the ground running. When I’m not thinking about how creatures and machines learn, I enjoy board games, guitar, reading, ultimate frisbee, and my wife’s cookies.
