Sophia Sanborn appointed Assistant Professor at Stanford School of Medicine

May 29, 2025

We are proud to announce that Sophia Sanborn (PhD 2021) has been appointed as Assistant Professor (Research) of Ophthalmology in the Stanford School of Medicine.  At Redwood, Sophia did her thesis work in Bruno Olshausen’s lab on group theoretic models of vision, in particular showing how the bispectrum can be learned from data to produce representations that are invariant to transformations contained in the data. She went on to work with Nina Miolane at UC Santa Barbara as a postdoctoral researcher and now directs the Enigma Project at Stanford.

Sophia’s research interests lie at the intersection of deep learning and theoretical neuroscience and focus on uncovering principles of neural representations in brains and machines.

You can learn more about Sophia’s work on her personal website. Congratulations Sophia!
